BLACK EARTH RISING (2018)

Co-composed with Martin Phipps

Director: Hugo Blick
Producer: Abi Bach, Hugo Blick, Greg Bergman
Production Companies: Drama Republic / BBC2 / Netflix

Kate Ashby was raised in Britain by her adoptive mother, Eve, but was born in Rwanda and was rescued as a young child from the genocide. Following in the footsteps of her mother, a respected British prosecutor in international criminal law, Kate works as a legal investigator for Michael Ennis. When Eve takes on a case prosecuting an African militia leader in the International Criminal Court, Michael and Kate are drawn in and their lives are turned upside-down.

  • “Black Earth Rising offers more than ratings-grabbing popcorn thrills. It flings an enormous cast of characters into a series of desperately combustible situations, and it demands that you keep up. It is, potentially, quite brilliant.” — The Guardian
  • “Michaela Coel and John Goodman are riveting in this tale of a woman searching for answers about how she survived the Rwandan genocide.” — IndieWire
  • “Blick has few equals when it comes to taking on extraordinarily complex topics, and even fewer who can match his overall excellence in the finished product.” — Hollywood Reporter
